The World Athletics Championships in Glasgow, held from March 1-3, have just come to a close. On this last day, 2 gold medals and one bronze were won by the African continent, all by women, who made their mark in this month dedicated to them. Tsige Duguma won gold in the women's 800 m, while Benin's Noélie Yarigo took bronze over the same distance at the age of 38. In the women's 1500 m, Freweyni Haliwu took gold. In addition to the men's 4x400 m, there were only African representatives in these distances: the men's 800 m and the men's 1500 m.
800 m final (F)
5 African women took part in the final. The gold medal did not escape the continent. Ethiopia's Tsige Duguma snatched it in 2:01.90. Great Britain's Jemma Reekie, the only non-African in the final, took silver. Her time was 2:02.72. Benin's Noélie Yarigo , 38, took bronze. Her time was 2:03.15.
1500 m final (M)
4 Africans took the start of the 14-runner race.None of them made it onto the final podium, with New Zealand's Geordi Beamish 1st (3:36.54), American Cole Hocker 2nd (3:36.69) and another American (3:36.72). The first African was Ethiopia's Samuel Tefera (3:38.10). His compatriot Biniam Mehary came 9th (3:40.00). Kenya's Vincent Kibet Keter (3:40.04) and South Africa's Ryan Mphahlele (3:41.08) finished 10th and 14th respectively.
1500 m final (F)
3 Africans, all Ethiopians, were on the starting line in the final out of 12 competitors. Gold went to Ethiopia's Freweyni Haliwu in 4:01.46. Silver and bronze went to Americans Nikki Hiltz (4:02.32) and Emilie Mackay (4:02.69).
Triple jump final (F)
On the final day of the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Glasgow, the 1st final of the day was the women's triple jump. In a final with no African representatives, Dominican Théa Lafond took the gold medal with a jump of 15.01m. Silver went to Cuban Leyanis Pérez Hernandez in 14.90 m. Spain's Ana Peleteiro-Compaore took bronze with 14.75.
High jump final (M)
The gold medal in the long jump (H) went to New Zealander Hamish Kerr with a jump of 2.36 m. Silver went to American Shelby Mcewen with 2.28m. Bronze went to South Korea's Sanghyeok Woo, also with 2.28 m. Africa was also absent from this final.
Pole vault final (M)
The pole vault podium was as follows:
1st Armand Duplantis (Sweden) with a jump of 6.05 m
2nd Sam Kendricks (USA) with a jump of 5. 90
3rd Emmanouil Karanis (Greece) with a jump of 5.85
Long jump final (F)
In the women's long jump competition, gold and silver went to the USA with Tara Davis-Woodhall and Monae Nichols jumping 7.07 m and 6.85 m respectively. Spain's Fatima Diamé won the bronze medal with a jump of 6.78 m.
4x400 m relay final
The Kenyan 4x400 m relay, after finishing 3rd in its heat behind the USA and Belgium, qualified on time (3:06.96), the 8th and final qualifying time. This time was the new African record for the distance. Unfortunately, Kenya finished just one step off the podium in the final, beating the African record for the distance for the 2nd time of the day with a time of 3:06.71. Belgium won the gold medal with a time of 3:02.54. The USA came 2nd in (3.02.60), the Netherlands 3rd in (3:04.25 ).
4x400 m relay final (F)
Victory went to the Netherlands (3 :25.07). The USA finished second (3 :25.34). Great Britain (3 :26.36) finished 3rd.
60 m hurdles final
The gold medal went to Bahamian Devynne Charlton, who ran a world-record time of 7.65s. France's Cyréna Samba-Mayéla took silver with a time of 7.74. The podium was completed by Poland's Pia Skrzyszowska in 7.79.
800 m final (H): In the 800 m, the podium was as follows:
