World Indoor Championships: Zango in gold as Barega and Tsegay beaten

The second day of the World Indoor Athletics Championships took place this Saturday, March 2, in Glasgow, Scotland. On a day that will go down in history, Burkina Faso's Hugues Fabrice Zango won gold in the triple jump.

Hugues Fabrice Zango has made athletics history in his country. The Burkinabé won gold in the triple jump at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow on Saturday March 2. He becomes the first African triple jump world champion. He beat Algeria's Yasser Triki and Portugal's Tiago Pereira with a jump of 17.53 m. Following his outdoor gold in Budapest, Zango has now won his second world medal.

Selemon Barega and Tsegay beaten in the 3000 m

Ethiopia's Selemon Barega (7:43.64) had to settle for bronze in the 3,000m. The Olympic 10,000 m champion lost his title to Belgium's John Heymans. The Belgian record-holder (13:03.46) since last January in Boston, Heymans had secured his place at the World Indoor Championships in the 3,000m on the basis of his world ranking. American Yared Nuguse (7:43.59) took 2nd place.

Gudaf Tsegay, the favorite in the women's 3,000m, failed to retain her crown. She settled for second place with a time of 8:21.13. Victory went to American Elle St. Pierre in 8mn20s80, a new championship record. Kenya's Beatrice Chepkoech finished third in 8mn22s68.

A very African final

Africa was well represented in the women's 800-meter semi-finals. Ethiopia's Tsige Duguma (1:58:35) and Habitam Alemu (1:58:59) will take part in the final of the World Indoor Athletics Championships. They are well accompanied by Uganda's Halimah Nakaayi (1:58:91), Benin's Noélie Yarigo (1:59:45) and Kenya's Vivian Chebet Kiprotich (1:59:65).
