Senegal, one of the announced favorites to win the AFCON 2023, were prematurely eliminated from the competition by Côte d'Ivoire (1-1, Pen 4-5), in the 8th round. This elimination has sparked debate about the future of coach Aliou Cissé. Former Senegal international and Canal+ consultant Mamadou Niang gave his opinion on the matter. "The future of Aliou Cissé? I don't need to think about it. The fact is that Senegal have been eliminated. We'll have to take stock. Aliou is intelligent enough to work and take stock with the federation and see what the future holds. It's up to him to decide whether to stay or go. The president of the federation is very fond of him, and we haven't forgotten all the good times he's given us, taking us to the final twice. He gave Senegal this first competition, so we mustn't be ungrateful," he says.
Mamadou Niang added: "He brought joy to the Senegalese. It's not as if we'd been eliminated in the group phase. It's also against the host country, so it's not a shameful elimination. We wanted to go further, perhaps to the final, but we were unlucky to lose to Côte d'Ivoire, so that's nothing to be ashamed of either. An assessment will be made and Aliou will make the decision," he concludes.
