Carlos Queiroz declines offer to take over Algeria

Former Egypt coach Carlos Queiroz has repeatedly turned down an offer from the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) to take over the national team. According to Algerian media reports, discussions between the FAF and Queiroz had reached an advanced stage, but the Portuguese coach finally excused himself.

Sources add that Queiroz's lawyer expressed the Portuguese coach's anger at what was circulating in the Algerian media concerning his Alzheimer's disease. Queiroz denied this. He stressed his well-being, adding that he would send a medical file confirming his good health.

The Algerian national team was unable to get past the group phase of the African Cup of Nations in two editions (2021 and 2023). This prompted the FAF to part company with coach Djamel Belmadi, who took over as Algeria coach in August 2018. They had led the Fennecs to final victory at the AFCON 2019. However, Belmadi subsequently failed to qualify them for the 2022 World Cup, or get them past the group stage at the last AFCON.

The future coach of the Algerian national team will lead the Greens at the international soccer tournament hosted by Algeria in March. South Africa, Bolivia and Andorra will also be taking part.
