Football - African Super League: Motsepe announces kick-off

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has announced that the African Super League will begin in October. "In October this year, the first Super League will begin. Some people asked for the dates, and we have them. Motsepe also revealed that there were plans to give the tournament a new name in order to attract more sponsors. "If you associate the name Super with a football competition, it has negative connotations. We can change the name, but what will actually happen in October is the inauguration. I will continue to use the name African Super League. Until we change it.

The CAF boss, who was at the FIFPRO Africa Congress in Gaborone, Botswana, also explained why the tournament would be particularly beneficial for the players. According to stakeholders, the competition is expected to generate huge financial returns as it is expected to attract more than 100 million dollars which will be used to improve infrastructure and promote the game on the continent.
