New York Mini 10K: Senbere Teferi takes Obiri and breaks the event record

Senbere Teferi wins the New York Mini 10K with a personal best and an event record. The Ethiopian clocked a fine time of 30:12, seven seconds ahead of double world 5000m champion Hellen Obiri (30:19).

Teferi and Obiri separated from the rest of the field in the first half of the race. The two runners reached the 5km mark in 15mn28s. Just before the clock ticked 27 minutes, Teferi made a push and took a stride ahead, but Obiri, who won the Boston Marathon in April and the NYC Half in March, quickly caught her up. A minute and a half later, it was Obiri's turn to push the pace as they approached another hill, but again Teferi - second behind Obiri at the NYC Half - caught her and they continued to run neck and neck. In the end, it was Teferi who won in 30:12.

It was difficult," said Teferi. We were running together from the start. It was extremely competitive. On the climbs, I could tell that she (Obiri) was getting a bit tired, so I could pull away. I also know the course well, so that helped."
