Sports: Angola suspended by the World Anti-Doping Agency

Sports: Angola suspended by the World Anti-Doping Agency

Angola has been suspended until further notice by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for failing to comply with the deadlines set to bring its sports law into line with the statutes of this international organization. A WADA document sent to the Angolan Olympic Committee (COA), made public on Saturday February 17, states that the country has lost its privileges until reinstated. Likewise, Angolan representatives will not be eligible to hold office or play any role as members of the world body's board or committee.

According to the same document, on September 22, 2023, the World Anti-Doping Agency issued a communiqué stating Angola's non-compliance, giving the country a further four months to rectify the situation. However, the January 22, 2024 deadline passed without the non-conformities having been satisfactorily corrected. As a result, WADA's sentence has fallen, even though Angola's anti-doping bill was unanimously approved by the National Assembly on Friday February 16.

Angolan athletes could therefore miss the Paris 2024 Olympic Games if the suspension is upheld by WADA.
