Black Stars duo Kamaldeen Sulemana and Ransford-Yeboah Konigsdorffer will not be playing for Ghana's U23 team at the Africa Cup of Nations. The Southampton and Hamburg players were among three Black Stars players included in the Black Meteors squad for the tournament in Morocco. They were due to rejoin the team after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Ghana and Madagascar.
For the moment, the reasons for their withdrawal are unknown. Two hypotheses have been put forward. One is that the two players do not wish to play for the Meteors at the tournament. A more plausible explanation is that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) was unable to convince the players' clubs to release them for the tournament. FIFA cannot force clubs to release players for this age group. The U23 Africa Cup of Nations will take place from 24 June to 8 July in Morocco.
