The Basketball Africa League on Tuesday organized a workshop on women empowerment and sports activities. This event is part of the policy of the African League to make sport and basketball in particular a means to fight against inequalities and change lives.
In the Basketball Africa League (BAL), women play a major role. They are in the logistics, play the role of team liaison, not to mention the administrative work done by some. The League is trying to ensure that parity is respected.
When asked about the role of women, the president of the BAL, Amadou Gallo Fall, said: "At the BAL, we recently launched a program of activism against violence against women. The objective was to raise awareness and then fight this scourge against women in our society. At the BAL and the NBA, we have women in strategic positions in different departments, in the operational teams. But also in the whole ecosystem including refereeing, service providers, just to name a few."
"The practice of sports activities empowers women".
Many people see sport as entertainment, especially when it comes to women. Things have changed and sports actively contribute to the well-being of women. "The practice of sports activities by women allows them to free themselves from societal or cultural constraints. It also allows them to confront mixed gender and even to rehabilitate their bodies after a trauma. Much more than a game or entertainment, sport is proving to be a formidable lever for the emancipation of women. Women are still too much of a minority and too little visible in sport. This is one of the reasons why we created SEED (Sports for Education and Economic Development) by integrating young girls to help in their training," continues Gallo Fall.
During each stage of the BAL 2022 season, the League will dedicate a day to BAL4HER. Young women from the local basketball community will therefore be invited to participate in a VIP game day experience and a workshop focused on building careers in the sports industry. "We want to use our league to permanently empower women and girls. We look forward to continuing our mission of using sport to uplift communities, fight inequality and change lives," concludes the Seed Academy founder.
