African Super League: Exciting fixtures to kick off the experiment

The African Super League kicks off this Friday, October 20, with the first leg of the quarter-finals. A new competition launched by the Confederation of African Football. CAF has selected six teams to compete for the trophy.

Simba SC-Al Ahy (15:00 GMT)

Tanzanians and Egyptians will have the honor of launching the African Super League for posterity. Simba SC host Al Ahly of Egypt. An eagerly awaited match in Tanzania. Simba SC have not lost in their own backyard for 10 matches in all competitions. Al Ahly will be keen to put an end to this run. One of the best teams in Africa for decades, Al Ahly will be looking to win this first edition of the African Super League. Since losing 0-1 to USM Alger in the CAF Super Cup on September 15, the Cairo outfit have gone unbeaten in all competitions, winning 5 times.

 

Petro-Mamelodi (15:30 GMT)

Scheduled for this Saturday, October 21, Angola's Petro will host South Africa's Mamelodi for a place in the semi-finals of the inaugural African Super League. The Angolans must make the difference at home before travelling to South Africa on the 24th of the same month. The two teams are no strangers to each other, having met frequently in the African Champions League. The last time they met was on April 4, 2022. Petro and Mamelodi drew 1-1.

TP Mazembe-EspéranceTunis (15h00 GMT)

On Sunday October 22, TP Mazembe host Esperance Tunis.Both teams are regulars in all CAF competitions. For this reason, the continental body has co-opted these two teams for its first edition of the African Super League.The Congolese and Tunisians have not met since 2019 in African competitions. TP Mazembe have won 4 and drawn 1 of their last five matches. The same record applies to Esperance Tunis.

Enyimba-Wydad (18:00 GMT)

Morocco's Wydad have a slight advantage in the first leg of their quarter-final against Nigeria on Sunday October 22. The Moroccans are unbeaten in their last 5 matches (4 wins, 1 draw) in all competitions. This is in stark contrast to their opponents Enyimba, who have won one, lost two and drawn as many of their last matches. This first round of the Super Legue africa
