Bayelsa Queens, Ampem Darkoa rekindle Nigeria, Ghana rivalry in WAFU-B WCL final

Bayelsa Queens of Nigeria and Ampem Darkoa Ladies of Ghana will open their account at the 2022 TotalEnergies CAF Women's Champions League against each other on Saturday, September 3.

Nigeria and Ghana rekindle their rivalry in football, and this time it will be the ladies who will go to war in making their respective nations proud, meeting for the second time in the final of the zonal qualifiers.

Both clubs progressed to the semi-final from same Group B, with Bayelsa finishing as leaders on goal difference, having both tied on four points with Ampem. They both went on to record victories in their respectively semi-final matches, with the Nigerians thrashing their Benin Republic fores 6-0 at the Yamoussoukro Stadium in Cote d'Ivoire.

Rampant Bayelsa demolished the Benin side, with Chinyere Igbomalu grabbing a brace in the match, including the first in the opening half lead before Kafayat Bashiru made it 2-0 moments after the recess.

The Nigerians went on to add the third and fourth when Glory Edet and Etim Edidiong found the net respectively to boosted their dominance before Igbomalu's second of the match and Mary Anjor completed the rout venue.

On the other hand, Ghanaian champions ended the match with nine-woman as they needed the shoot-out to be able to advance. The Abidjan-based club opened the scoring under one minute through Adjoua Edwige Niamien but Ampem restored parity thanks to a late strike by  Ampem defeated hosts Africa Sports 6-5 on penalties after the game ended 1-1 in regulation time.

The final will be a repeat of the group stage clash between Bayelsa Queens and Ampem Darkoa, which ended in a 0-0 draw. Last year, Nigeria's Rivers Angels lost 3-1 to Hasaccas Ladies of Ghana in the final in Abidjan.

The winner of the final between Ampem Darkoa and ruthless Nigerian side om scheduled for Saturday at 1800 GMT will represent the WAFU-B zone B in the finals of this year's CAF Women's Champions League in Morocco.
