Nigerian representatives Kwara United and Remo Stars endured mixed fortunes of the 2022 CAF Confederation Cup, following their contrasting results in the second leg, preliminary stage encounters on Sunday.
Contrasting fortunes saw Rivers United suffered a 1-0 defeat against Liberian side Watanga in Monrovia at Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex, while Plateau United clinched a 1-0 win over AS Stade Mandji in Abuja.
Goalkeeper Adewale Adeyinka was the hero as Kwara United drew 0-0 with hosts AS Douanes of Niger Republic in the second leg match of their first round fixture and it was played at the Stade Gen. Senyi Kountche in Niamey.
The result meant Kwara United advanced 3-0 on aggregate to book a first round berth at the expense of AS Douane. The Nigerians progression saw them rewarded with a first round date with reigning Confederation Cup champions Renaissance Sportive de Berkane of Morocco.
In Remo, Remo Stars, the second Nigeria representatives were booted out of the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday following a 1-0 defeat at the hands of visiting Moroccan side AS FAR Rabat.
The Nigerians had earned a 1-1 first leg result in Morocco a week ago and were expected to at least give a good account of themselves in the return fixture at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo.
Unfortunately, the shock preliminary round elimination of the first timers happened no thanks to a defensive blunder which gifted Joseph Guede Gnadou a second half winner for the traveling Rabat based outfit.
With a favourable second leg, preliminary stage triumph, the experienced North African side have handed the West African nation a early stage casuality following the knocking out of Remo Stars.
