FIFA Delegation Touch Down in Tamale for Ghana's FA Elections

Ghana Football Association

A high-level FIFA delegation, led by Gelson Fernandes, Director of Member Associations for Africa, has landed in Tamale ahead of Ghana's eagerly anticipated GFA Elective Congress. Accompanying him are Silmara Sousa, FIFA's Development Program Coordinator for Member Associations in Africa, and Ahmed Harraz, Senior Manager of FIFA Member Associations Governance Services.

This delegation arrived in Accra earlier this week and made their way to Tamale on Wednesday morning, setting the stage for the upcoming congress scheduled for Thursday, October 5, 2023. The congress holds the key to determining the new leadership that will guide the Ghana Football Association for the next four years.

Among the crucial positions up for election are not only the presidency with the incumbent Kurt Okraku set to go unopposed in the race for the Presidential seat should his contender George Afriyie's disqualification still hold. Afriyie's journey took a sudden detour earlier last month when he was disqualified by the Elections Committee for failing to meet specific criteria outlined in Article 13(2)(j) of the Ghana Football Association statutes, 2019. Additionally, he failed to secure the required support from fellow GFA members.

The election process will encompass all ten regions of Ghana, where regional delegates will cast their votes for regional chairpersons. Subsequently, two members will be chosen to serve on the Executive Council, representing the collective will of the regional delegates.

It's important to note that the path to these elections has been marred by legal disputes. Initially slated for 2023, the GFA Elections faced postponements due to an injunction filed by King Faisal Babies Football Club. Court proceedings have been suspended until October 12, further complicating the electoral landscape.
