Moses Armah, the President of Medeama SC, has conceded that the challenges looming in the 2023/24 CAF Champions League are considerably tougher than their previous encounters in the preliminary rounds. Notably, the Yellow and Mauves have etched their name into Ghanaian football history as the first team to grace the group stage of Africa's premier club competition in over a decade, following in the footsteps of Berekum Chelsea's 2012 feat.
Medeama's arduous journey to this juncture culminated in a thrilling second preliminary round victory over Guinean giants Horoya, with a 4-3 aggregate score. Armah emphasized that their progression was far from effortless, and he was keen to underline the immense challenge that awaits them in the group stage, where they will encounter some of the continent's football powerhouses.
"Securing our qualification was no walk in the park, and we want to stress that it was an uphill battle. However, we are fully aware that the road ahead is strewn with even more formidable obstacles, as we are set to face the giants of African club football in the group stage," remarked Armah.
He further added, "Consequently, we humbly appeal for unwavering support from all quarters to ensure our Champions League journey is crowned with success."
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Tarkwa-Nsuaem in the Western Region, George Mireku Duker also expressed concern about the decision of Gold Fields to end its sponsorship for Medeama Sporting Club.
In an appeal, the MP who is a staunch supporter of the Ghana Premier League Champions has called on the leadership of the mining conglomerate to continue sponsoring the club.
“Goldfields Ghana must as soon as possible rescind their decision of not sponsoring Medeama again. It’s their responsibility to support Medeama, and as the MP, I want them to rescind that letter they wrote to the club. We will talk to their leadership in South Africa to see the need to sponsor Medeama,” the Tarkwa-Nsuaem MP said at a press conference.
Thanks to the sponsorship of Goldfields, Medeama SC have over the years become a force to reckon with.
Just last year, the club managed to win their first-ever Ghana Premier League title.
Over the weekend, Medeama SC reached the group stage of the CAF Champions League, becoming the first club to do so in 11 years.
