Pape Matar Sarr: Spurs' ace of spades

Pape Matar Sarr: Spurs' ace of spades

Tottenham's midfield is firing on all cylinders. Pape Matar Sarr is blossoming in Spurs' midfield and is becoming an essential part of the team's set-up.

We certainly didn't expect to see him emerge as one of the Premier League's best midfielders this season. Pape Matar Sarr has completely transformed himself under Ange Postecoglou. The Senegalese international is a key component of Tottenham's midfield and the missing piece in the Spurs midfield jigsaw. This year, the 21-year-old is outshining the competition and catching the eye of the likes of Yves Bissouma and Dejan Kulusevski. His superb pass in the 4-0 win over Aston Villa proves that Pape Matar Sarr is sitting on an inordinate amount of confidence in his game.

Pape Matar Sarr seems to be the kind of player around whom Tottenham could build a good team. Sarr is now the glue that binds Spurs' midfield together, possessing many attributes such as intensity of pace and defensive ability. But also good ball control.

Matar Sarr: 3 goals, 3 assists

A year ago, the Senegalese was a minor player under Antonio Conte last season. But this season, he is an integral part of Spurs' midfield as the brightest emerging talent at the moment. "I was settling into a new life, not just a new club. I benefited from the advice of many team-mates, not just Yves, although he was a great help. There's also Hugo Lloris, Pierre Hojbjerg and Ivan Perisic. It was a difficult period because I wasn't playing regularly," explains Sarr of his difficult first year in London.

"Playing those games last season are moments I'll remember forever. Playing big games is a dream come true, which is what you aim for as a youngster. I'd like to think it's partly due to all the hard work I've put in this first year," adds the Senegalese player.

In 23 matches this season, Pape Matar Sarr has scored 3 goals and provided 3 assists. What's more, the Senegalese international has completed 917 passes, including 39 per game. Sarr made 34 tackles (74%), made 16 interceptions, recovered 103 balls and won 69 duels.
