Portuguese manager José Santos Peseiro has been appointed as the new head coach of Nigeria's senior men national team.

In a statement, the Nigeria Football Federation announced the long awaited development on Sunday evening following resignation of Augustine Eguavoen ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in June.

“The Nigeria Football Federation on Sunday announced the appointment of Mr Jose Santos Peseiro as the new head coach of the senior men national team, Super Eagles,” the statement read.

“The appointment is with immediate effect, subject to the signing of terms agreed between the NFF and Mr Peseiro.

“Jose Vitor dos Santos Peseiro, 62 last month, is a Portuguese who played as a striker in his days and has wide and varied experience coaching top clubs and national teams across four different continents, namely Europe, Asia, Africa and South America.”

Following the exit of Gernot Rohr last November, the 62-year-old was named as his permanent replacement a month later but the NFF shockingly made a u-turn after the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations to retain Eguavoen in February.

Peseiro had been without a job since he left his role as the Venezuela national team coach in August 2021 over unpaid salary and also formerly handled at Panathinaikos, Real Madrid, Sporting CP, Al Ahly, Braga.

Following his re-appointment, he will be assisted by Ajax great Finidi George as the first assistant alongside Salisu Yusuf as the second assistant and Usman Abdallah as the third assistant), while Ike Shorunmu as goalkeeper trainer.

The Portuguese will launch his coaching reign with Nigeria when the Super Eagles' take on Mexico and Ecuador in friends during the tour of the United States of America. The Eagles will try El Tri for size at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas on May 28 before heading to New Jersey to face Ecuador at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison on June 2.
