South Africa: Mamelodi Sundowns sign national team captain

South African national team captain Ronwen Williams has signed for Mamelodi Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns have announced the signing of South African national team captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams on a five-year contract.

It’s believed to be one of the biggest deals ever done in the history of South African football, as the goalkeeper made a move from Pretoria rivals to join the DSTV Premiership champions ahead of the new season, which starts on August 5. Sundowns are due to face Cape Town City on that day.

Sundowns have been interested in Williams for quite a while now and they finally managed to convince the 30-year-old to make a move, where he will join Denis Onyango, Kennedy Mweene and Reyaad Pieterse in the goalkeeping department.

Williams will get to play in the CAF Champions League in the coming season after Sundowns won the league.

In an interview with the Sundowns media department, Williams said: “I feel great being at Sundowns. I feel at home. I can't wait to get started. Obviously, I know that Sundowns are associated with being champions and I am no different. I feel I have done fairly well over the last few years at my previous club.

“There will always be pressure and challenges, but it's one that I am ready for. It's not going to be easy, but I think I have the experience and ability. The technical team and players have faith in me because I have played with many of the guys before. I can't wait to get started."
