South Africa: PSL to meet over possible return of fans to stadiums

Supporters are hoping to make a return to stadiums in South Africa
Reports coming out of South Africa suggest that the Premier Soccer League (PSL) could look at the possibility of having supporters back at the stadium after president Cyril Ramaphosa eased restrictions in his state of the nation address on Monday.

The Premiership in South Africa has not had supporters attending matches since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020. There was a lockdown in South Africa and there have been no league matches since then. There have been spectators, however, in some of the national team matches, as well as the MTN8 cup final last year and the recent CAF Champions League matches played by Mamelodi Sundowns and AmaZulu. In all these matches, there have been no more than 2000 spectators allowed into the stadium, but the PSL played it safe when it comes to supporters attending league matches.

With the easing of some of the restrictions, the PSL executive committee is expected to meet on Monday to decide on whether supporters should return to the stadium.

After Ramphosa’s update for the nation on Monday, 21 March, indications are that venues could have up to 50 percent of their capacities, which should allow supporters to attend matches of teams that they support.

While there has been excitement over the possibility of supporters returning to the stadiums, the public in South Africa need to wait to hear what the PSL executive committee has decided regarding the matter at hand.
