Zimbabwe: Benjani sacked by Premier League club

Benjani Mwaruwari is leaving Zimbabwean club Ngezi Platinum Stars

Former Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers striker Benjani Mwaruwari has been sacked as head coach of Ngezi Platinum Stars, according to reports in Zimbabwe.

Mwaruwari, who is regarded as a legend in Zimbabwe, was in charge of just 13 matches for the club, but things did not go well for him while he was there.

He came in as a replacement for Rodwell Dhlakama and managed just three wins in the 13 matches he was in charge of. The last match he was in charge ended in a 1-0 defeat to Yahah at National Sports Stadium on Saturday, 23 July. That was the last straw as management to let go of the coach.

The 43-year-old former national team striker, who holds a Uefa A coaching license, has been sacked with his entire technical staff.

Ngezi are currently in ninth place on the Zimbabwean Premier League standings, with just seven victories in the 22 matches they have played. They have drawn nine matches and they have suffered six defeats.

Mwaruwari, who also had stints in France and Switzerland when he was a player, will now be looking at the next chapter of his young coaching career, with the hope that he can bounce back as soon as possible. He had a successful career as a player and has high hopes of doing well as a coach in the dugout.
